Context

As autonomous checkout technologies continue to enter the retail space, many solutions struggle with common in-store items that lack traditional barcodes — like fountain drinks, fresh produce, and mixed SKUs. For Mashgin, showcasing the platform’s ability to handle these real-world challenges was critical for enterprise credibility. This video was created in partnership with Circle K to demonstrate how Mashgin succeeds where many self-checkout systems fail.

Challenge

Circle K and other convenience store operators evaluate autonomous checkout systems not on idealized retail scenarios, but on everyday use cases that matter to their business and customers. Most self-checkout technologies require manual inputs or barcode scanning for items like:

  • Fountain drinks

  • Loose produce (e.g., bananas)

  • Multiple items with mixed packaging

These friction points undermine user experience and operational reliability — especially in high-traffic, convenience retail environments.

The strategic challenge was to produce a piece of content that would clearly and confidently communicate:

  • Capability: Mashgin can handle complex, barcode-less items seamlessly.

  • Differentiation: The system outperforms competitors that require manual overrides.

  • Clarity: Prospective buyers can see it in action without needing deep technical explanation.

Strategy

To influence both enterprise buyers and internal stakeholders, the video needed to:

  • Visualize the problem and the solution side-by-side
    — not abstract claims, but specific, recognizable retail scenarios.

  • Be easy to understand even for non-technical audiences
    — executives, operations leaders, and category decision-makers.

  • Support broader enterprise sales conversations
    — serving as a reusable asset in sales decks and deployment discussions.

We deliberately chose a scenario with mixed items including a banana and fountain drink — demonstrating real challenges that barcoded systems typically can’t handle without staff intervention.

Execution

As Producer & Director, I led the full creative and operational execution:

  • Concept & narrative framing: Crafted the story arc to emphasize real-world capability and differentiation.

  • Shoot planning: Collaborated with Circle K operations to stage a realistic checkout experience with genuine SKUs and mixed items.

  • Direction of talent and action: Guided the actor’s interaction with the system to highlight ease of use and the absence of barcode reliance.

  • Editing & pacing: Structured the edit to make the system’s performance unmistakable and frictionless, focusing on the sequence of scanning mixed items and the moment of successful checkout.

The finished video offers a clear, high-impact demonstration that can be understood in seconds — without relying on technical jargon.

Outcome

This piece has been used as a strategic sales and awareness asset:

  • It has been distributed internally among Circle K and other enterprise stakeholder groups to build confidence in Mashgin’s differentiated capabilities.
